What Is Gold Vermeil? Everthing you need to know | Keshi Jewellery

Curious about "Gold Vermeil"? Whether you've seen it tagged as 14k or 18k vermeil, we're breaking down everything you need to know about this durable, high-end finish and why it deserves a spot in your jewellery box.

What Is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced vehr-may, of French origin) is a legally regulated classification for premium gold-plated jewellery. To earn the "vermeil" title, a piece must strictly fulfill three core criteria:

    • Sterling Silver Core: The base must consist entirely of sterling silver (92.5% pure silver blended with 7.5% alloy)—a high-standard precious metal superior to common brass or copper bases.
    • Substantial Layer Thickness: The gold coating must measure at least 2.5 microns thick (where 1 micron equals one-thousandth of a millimetre).
    • Minimum 10k Gold Purity: The outer layer must be real gold of at least 10 karats (representing a minimum of 41.7% pure gold content. Keshi Jewellery uses 14 karats and 18 karats).

Gold Vermeil is not the same with Gold Plated!

While they may look similar on the surface, gold vermeil and traditional gold-plated jewellery are built very differently:

    • Core Metal: Standard gold-plated items usually rely on inexpensive base metals like brass or copper. Gold vermeil, by contrast, strictly requires a premium sterling silver foundation.
    • Gold Thickness: Gold plating typically features a thin layer around 0.25 to 0.5 microns. Gold vermeil demands a minimum 2.5-micron, offering far greater durability.
    • Longevity & Value: Because standard plating is so thin, it wears off quickly and tarnishes faster. Gold vermeil delivers superior quality, lasting brilliance, and long-term value.

Is Gold Vermeil High Quality?

Second only to solid gold, gold vermeil is the highest-quality tier of gold-tone jewellery available. It serves as the ideal alternative for anyone looking for exceptional craft and longevity without the solid gold price point.

While standard gold-plated often use thin gold layers over cheap metals like brass or copper—making them prone to quick wear and tarnishing—gold vermeil combines a thicker gold layer over a sterling silver base. If you are seeking a sustainable, high-value alternative to solid gold, gold vermeil is your best choice.

Will My Gold Vermeil Jewellery Fade?

The quick answer is yes—with heavy, long-term wear, gold vermeil can slowly rub down over time. But don't worry! Thanks to the generous thickness of the gold layer, your pieces won't lose their lustre overnight. With thoughtful care, gold vermeil will stay brilliant for years to come.

Can Gold Vermeil Get Wet?

Gold vermeil can handle brief contact with water, but it isn't considered 100% waterproof. Submerging vermeil jewellery for extended periods isn't recommended if you want to keep your pieces in top condition. While getting wet occasionally won't ruin a piece instantly, prolonged exposure causes chemical reactions over time that dull the shine and accelerate tarnishing.

Strictly speaking, no metal is completely waterproof—even solid gold benefits from intentional care. To protect the finish, always remove your vermeil pieces before swimming, going to the beach, showering, or hitting the gym (as sweat speeds up tarnish, too!).

Can I Wear My Gold Vermeil in the Shower?

The short answer: forgetting to take your pieces off for a quick shower now and then won't ruin them right away, but it shouldn't become a habit! Frequent exposure to shower water accelerates tarnishing, and chemicals in your shampoos, conditioners, and soaps can strip away that lovely golden shine. If your jewellery does end up taking a rinse with you, just be sure to pat it dry completely right after.

Is Gold Vermeil Hypoallergenic?

Yes, gold vermeil is a fantastic choice for sensitive skin! The key factor in skin reactions is nickel, which lower-grade manufacturers occasionally mix into their plating.

We prioritize skin-safe materials by ensuring every piece of our gold vermeil jewellery is completely nickel-free. Designed for all skin types, you can wear your favourite pieces all day with complete comfort.
